Escola de Mulheres - Oficina de Teatro

ESCOLA de MULHERES - OFICINA DE TEATRO was founded in 1995, in Lisbon, by a group of women from different generations and experiences, sharing the same feeling: the difficult role of women in the Portuguese Theatre Scene.
Our aim is to promote new feminine dramaturgies, both national and international, and to develop feminine creation and work in the theatre. We realize that the themes usually presented in our stages don’t reflect the roles women have been playing in the last decades, as well as the new contradictions, which have risen out of gender and role playing dichotomies.
Theatre in Portugal displays mainly the male point of view on women, and therefore the male universe.
Escola de Mulheres is now part of the European project La Mirada and is taking steps in order to establish new partnerships with other International Women Theatre Groups.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR - FERNANDA LAPA

WONDERFUL READINGS. From January to June, by invitation of The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Company adapted a series of twelve traditional stories where actors, musicians and dancers recreated the fantastic universe of those fairy tales in an active interaction with children. Those traditional stories were presented ignoring the traditional female and male parts, thus breaking the stereotypes of the passive role women usually play on them.
